I made this thread at another forum and since I am feeling really lazy, I am going to just cut and paste it because I'm not in the mood to type a heap of this out again so here it is:
I thought I would make this thread because I think it would be interesting to see people's responses. Some people might think this is a stupid question but don't post if you don't like. ^_^
If you had to lose one of your five senses for any reason, which one would it be? You have sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. They are all very valuable to a human but of course some people are born without sight or are incapable of hearing and some people lose senses over time due to illness and suffering.
I don't want people saying 'Oh I'd rather lose none at all' because that's not my question. I know people don't want to lose any of their senses for real but if you had no choice, which one would you lose? I was asked this question a long time ago in school and everybody had different answers, it was really interesting. Yes and I know you don't get a choice in life!
Anyway, the easiest one to lose imo would probably be taste but you wouldn't be able to enjoy your favorite foods anymore! I wouldn't want to lose my sight that's for sure because that's a very valuable thing to have. To lose the ability to hear would mean that you would no longer be able to listen to music and such. Then there's smell.. without that you wouldn't be able to smell the beautiful scent of flowers or delicious food. Then there's touch, it would not be fun if you weren't able to touch or have any feeling what so ever.
They are all very valuable in their own ways but I think I would have to say hearing. I know I wouldn't be able to listen to music and such anymore but the other senses are too important to lose imo. There are still ways to deal with being deaf and you can still read and write. If not that, I would choose taste because then I could still enjoy everything else except enjoying food!
Anywho, enough of me ranting on. Which sense would you be prepared to lose?

Smell! Some things smell bad and this way they would stop bothering me!
Well, actually smell comes handy many times but come to think of it, which sense doesn't?
Well, rather than losing sight or touch, which would be much worse, I prefer giving up smell.
However, I asure you, I feel much confortable with all my senses =] _________________

I would say touch. It indeed suck greatly not to feel the loving touch of those who care about you, but on the flipside I'm a vigilante. Not feeling pain could mean I could just keep going. I have a high pain threshold as it is, but no touch? It could really work for me. I'd miss taste too much as I love my cheeses and alcohol and as taste and smell greatly effect each other to remove smell would also remove a good amount of my ability to taste. I need my hearing and vision for interacting with others. _________________ 'What is sanity but a restriction on potential?

Ah man.. Smell is so underestimated.
Did you know that without smell, we would lose 25% of our taste? Smell is most strongly linked to memory. It's much easier to link a smell to a name then a sound, or an image. Smell is actually one of the main things that attract us to someone. If we are a strong genetic match with someone, they will smell extremely attractive to us.. I love smell.
Sight. I would lose sight. Looks have never mattered to me much, and I have seen everything I wish to see in this world. Process of elimination... I want everything else too badly. _________________

I would most reather lose taste, cause I need touch and sight to play my video games, smell is really nice to have, and I need to hear... it actually makes me feel a lot more comfortable when I can hear what's going on... smell... would be my replacement for taste, because without taste, I still have some taste coming from my sense of smell allthough as Vampiric said, 25% of my taste ould be coming from my sense of smell, so I taste 25% as much as I would before So, I would say taste _________________ I am now 2000 points away from top on Reptillia on GH3 on the PS3, currently 6th place of all PS3 Reptillia players

...You sure about that? I've seen people with this illness... The inability to feel pain or touch.. It isn't good. Really... Think about it. When you're seriously ill, and you go to the doctor.. Their usual question? "Where does it hurt?"
You could have cancer.. You could be dying slowly from the inside and have no clue at all. Another thing... Without touch you don't feel the need to pee. These people have to keep timers on them to tell them to go to the bathroom... It's terrible. _________________

I know. I took all that into consideration. But sadly my high pain threshold means I wouldn't feel it anyway. When my appendix ruptured, the first I knew was when I had a lovely gangrene infection some time later. I figured then it was just a bad stomach ache. Almost killed me that one. As for peeing, without going into details I'll say this. I run like clockwork.
And I don't see myself with that high a life expectancy anyway. I tend to **** some important people off at times. Especially those associated with gangs who feel they're untouchable. And it's only a matter of time before my luck runs out. It'll take a while though, I have an awful lot.
The one thing I would miss is the touch of those I love. That said, it would be easier to protect those I care about without the nerves, no pain and all, and protecting the things I care about is more important to me than anything else. I'd easily give up my $$$$ of rare games for a friend. Anyday. If there was genuine need of course.... _________________ 'What is sanity but a restriction on potential?

I chose smell, because then it would be easier for me to be in a crowded room full of sweaty, ain't-bathed-in-a-week, nasty people. And as Vampiric said it is responsible for a fair amount of your taste. Therefore I would be able to eat more kinds of food without hurling all over the place.
