I know plenty of people claim that this is the greatest RPG of all time but is it really? Do you think that is overrated?

I find this game to be overrated myself, I love the game.. don't get me wrong but I don't believe it's the best game I have ever played. It has a nice storyline and an interesting group of characters. VIII has a nice storyline as well. It also has a great group of characters.

What makes this game better than all the other RPG's out there. I would like the ideas of others. Hopefully this won't turn into a flame war. It's a great game overall. I've never finished it completely but to where I played, it was enjoyable. I found it a shame when Aeris died though. :(

Does anybody else find this to be overrated? I guess it depends on what people like. Some people will prefer other games while some people will prefer FFVII.

Opinions? Why do you find this to be the greatest RPG ever? Or why do you find this game to be overrated?

I like it very much, but can't say I love it. I loved the game when I played it and beat it. I found it to have a great story and characters. it's just out of all the games I've played it isn't my favorite. Though it's in my book still a solid 9/10. I'd say it's in the top 10 RPG's for me, but yeah it's a good game, though true it is overated since so many think it's the best it's gotten to much rave publicity.

I would say that it is a great game. However, it is not one of the best I've ever played...the best final fantasy I've ever played is FFVI. There was so much going on with the story that it kept you enthralled for many hours...while FFVII had a good storyline...it just doesn't quite measure up.

Good? Yes. Greatest? Definitely not.

I was starting to think I was the only one left who doesn't think VII is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm pleased to see I'm wrong about it. I just never understood all the hype because quite honestly, I think it's unwarranted and baseless.

Best story? Please. It had plot holes big enough for Bahamut (all three of them) to fly through.

Characters? All stereotypes. Nothing unpredictable or particularly interesting. (I will admit a soft spot for Reno, though.) Sephiroth is NOT the greatest supervillain in the history of the universe. Conversely, Cloud is NOT the coolest hero. Woo, he swings a giantass sword that completely defies all laws of physics and gravity. That doesn't make him awesome, it means Square couldn't think of anything better.

I hate the materia system, it was very irritating and way too time-consuming.

I will grant that it had some great music, though.

I won't even mention the graphics. It was a necessary step in the evolution of the games so I won't hold it against Square.

Basically, most of not all of the elements were medicore but since for many it was the first RPG they played, there's that unfailing, unreasoning loyalty to a product that isn't even half of what the fanboys claim it is. It's a solid game overall, but no one element in it stands out. It's the combination as a whole that created all the hype.

...just my opinion, of course. And yes there are some blanket statements in there, but it does have truth to it.

since i never really played any other RPG's other than final fantasy i do tend to find this game the greatest ever..but if you guys have any suggestions on any games that might change my mind feel free to tell me

I beleive FF7 is one of the best RPGs ever. I'm sure not many of you have played it but I still rate Ultima 4 and Ultima 7 and the best RPGs ever. But that's me I'm Old Skool.

The game is great, has a good storyline that goes deeper as you play further on in the game. I liked the characters but, regardless of the facts that most people say that this is the best RP, I don't think the same. In fact the best RP for me is, and will always be, FFVIII.

Greatest RPG ever? Yes. Oh, yes. Smile

Cloud is the greatest hero in the history of heroes. Why? Because he's not really who he makes everyone thinks he is, only, he doesn't know it. His character goes very deep and is very well developed. At first, he's the tough mercenary (oh, wow), but then we realize his deeply scarred and twisted past. He's barely a real person, in an all-too-real cosmic war. Instead of following the tough guy/mysterious past archetype, square runs Cloud's character through a tumbler; passing him through countless emotions, re-arranging every trait in his makeup.

And Sephiroth. A villain you cannot hate. He's evil and psychotic, but you can't help but sympathize. To serve all your life and suddenly realize you're not even real. That's tough. He begins to hate what he's been serving his entire life; his purpose; Shinra. And, when you lose purpose, sanity is not far behind.

I, personally, loved the Materia system. With links, added bonuses, added effects, etc., there were limitless possibilities and strategies at your disposal. You can either balance yourself with solid stats and some magic, or sacrifice stats for powerful spells. The system allowed you sculpt your characters to a T.

I think the main reason people say that they think FFVII is overrated is because, and don't get me wrong, they were either playing the game with a biased opinion of it, or, they simply didn't want to go with the flow and immerse themselves in the game completely.

I think the game is one of the best games i ever played (i have to remember the date that that game was realised cause the graphics really suck). The storyline is really cool (maybe a little too hard to understand at the first try but wtever....) and has Aeris (OMFG that girl is awesome!!!)

....But.......nothing can be compared to FFx......its perfect....storyline, music, characters and the sphere gird (materia is another thing i dont like much....)

Final Fantasy 7 was good, but I don't say that it was the best, because I've played 9 and 10 and those two I thought were a lot better than 7. So no Final Fantasy 7 isn't the best game of all time in my opinion.
