I played it for over two years, currently on indefiniate hiatus though. It is a good game but there are many faults inherent in the system, which often leads to frustration. Most of them are only toward end game though, and for all I know they fixed them in the time I've been gone.
As for the storyline, there are actually multiple different plots, all mission based. Each expansion as well as the main game has its own story, complete with new areas and characters. All of it is optional, but tends to unlock bigger and better things to do. For example, completing the Rise of the Zilart storyline gives you access to Tu'lia, commonly known as Sky, and the ability to fight the gods.
It's worth buying if you have a lot of time to invest in playing it. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that everything in the game takes time. In some cases, hours. This has a lot to do with the massive scale of the game itself and the time it takes just to travel from place to place.
Overall, it's not a bad game, but it's pretty much a love it or hate it kind of thing.
